Join us at the Listening and Learning Workshops, ENGAGEDurham’s first community engagement event. As someone who lives, works, owns a business, goes to school or simply cares about the future of Durham, your opinions and ideas are valued.

All five Listening and Learning Workshops (identical in format and content) are scheduled between November 14-19 in locations throughout the community. Doors open 30 minutes early. Each workshop will be about two hours long. Spanish interpretation, free child care and light refreshments will be provided.

If you’re passionate about shaping Durham’s future this is your chance for your voice to be an integral part of the Comprehensive Plan process. Bring your ideas to one of the workshops listed below:

The Board of County Commissioners will hold a public hearing, October 28, 2019 at 7:00 p.m., 2nd floor, Commissioners' Meeting Room, 200 E. Main Street, to consider the following:

UDO Text Amendment

  • TC1800005 – Tree  and Landscape Revisions: Amendments to tree coverage and landscape/buffer requirements in Articles 8; Environmental Protection, Article 9, Landscaping and Buffering; Article 17, Definitions; and other associated sections.
  • TC1900003 – FEMA FIRM Update: A text amendment to Sec. 8.4, Floodplain and Flood Damage Protection Standards, to adopt revised flood insurance rate map (FIRM) panels issued by FEMA. 
  • *Late Add - TC1800007 - Expanding Housing Choices: Amendments modifying standards in Article 4, Zoning Districts; Article 5, Use Regulations; Article 6, District Intensity Standards; Article 7, Design Standards, and other associated sections of the UDO regarding accessory dwelling units, residential infill, housing type allowances and associated dimensional and density requirements, flag lots, and other associated provisions and definitions. Note: This item was originally heard by the Board on September 23, 2019, and was referred back to the administration. A new public hearing will be held to consider the amendments.

Plan Amendment

  • 4809 Farrington Road (A1900010) generally located at 4809 Farrington Road is a request to change the future land use designation from Industrial to Low-Medium Density Residential.

Zoning Map Changes

  • 4809 Farrington Road (Z1900028) generally located at 4809 Farrington Road is a request to change the zoning from Industrial Light with a Development Plan (IL(D)), Falls/Jordan Lake Watershed Protection Overlay District B (F/J-B), MTC I-40 Overlay to Residential Suburban-Multifamily (RS-M), Falls/Jordan Lake Watershed Protection Overlay District B (F/J-B), MTC I-40 Overlay.

The Durham Historic Preservation Commission will hold public hearings on October 1, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. in the Committee Room, 2nd Floor, 101 City Hall Plaza, to consider the following:

Certificates of Appropriateness

  • 2403 West Club Boulevard (COA1900089): A request submitted to enclose the existing engaged side porch, finish the attic, and replace the deteriorated rear addition with a new breakfast room and laundry room on the same footprint.
  • 808 Berkeley Street (COA1900090): A request submitted for the installation of a shed dormer to be erected on the back side of an existing A-frame roof.
