City of Durham, City Manager's Report, Thomas J. Bonfield, Durham City Manager

Finding a Solution

On Thursday, City and County government leaders, our law enforcement agencies, along with the Durham District Attorney’s office and the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina held a press conference to jointly address what has become obvious to us all, and most painfully to the families of the victims, the increasing number of gun crimes. While we are troubled to hear about the primarily young adult, teenage, and even children whose lives ended way too soon, what is often left out are the others who continue to live with the fear associated with the daily sound of gun fire. We know the answer to lighten this heavy cloud over our city is complex, and not simply a matter of police staffing or enforcement.

Addressing this issue requires resources and support from federal, state, and local partners, and that commitment was made clear in yesterday’s press conference. A recent report, “Felons with Firearms in Durham County,” shows 363 arrests for possessing firearms as a felon from 2016 to 2018. The report indicated that 53% of those cases were voluntarily dismissed. While the reasons for the dismissals may vary, it’s not new news, and certainly not to the felons, who, according to the report felt the consequences are minimal to none for being caught with a gun. The information shared in the report is enlightening, and highlights an area that must be addressed in our combined efforts to tackle this problem that continues to plague our community.

The City Administration continues to work closely with Chief Davis and the Durham Police Department to determine every way to respond to the increased gun violence in our community so that every family can be and feel safe in every neighborhood in Durham. Anyone who has information about recent crimes in Durham, is encouraged to call Crimestoppers at 919-683-1200.
