Park and Trail Maintenance

Garrett Road Park

Beginning July 5, a new plumbing line from the restroom building to the septic tank will be installed. A new ADA accessible concrete sidewalk in front of the restroom building will also be installed. This project is anticipated to take approximately 10 days (weather permitting).

Third Fork Creek Trail

Beginning Monday, June 25, crews will be working on the Third Fork Creek Trail to address vegetation issues. The trail will remain open, but please be alert, and expect some temporary delays. The work is expected to take a few weeks (weather permitting).

Crest Street Park - Baseball Field

The Crest Street Park Baseball Outfield project has been completed, but the field will remain closed. The sod has been placed on top in the outfield, and needs to root and knit together fully before the field is open for play. This waiting period will benefit the health of the sod, as well as ensure everyone's safety. Sod can slide around prior to taking root, especially during rainy times. The field will be reevaluated by the DPR Maintenance Unit on August 1 for a possible mid-August opening date.

Old North Durham Park - Soccer Field

Typically, DPR natural turf fields are closed in winter and high summer to allow a rest period for the grass to maintain good field health. Though there were no field rentals this winter, the field sustained damage from heavy use. In order to maintain the health of this field, DPR will close the goal mouths and center section of the field to repair the turf. DPR will not be able to rent the field until the turf is restored. The field will be reevaluated by the DPR Maintenance Unit on August 1 for a possible September 1 opening date.

American Tobacco Trail (ATT)

Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) is closing a small gravel parking lot on the American Tobacco Trail (ATT) on Fayetteville Street near Antler Point Drive. This Summer, DPR will open a new trailhead parking lot on the ATT adjacent to C.M. Herndon Park. Trailhead parking and restroom facilities are currently available at C.M. Herndon Park and Solite Park. Working with private groups, DPR has developed bike maintenance stations at the American Tobacco Campus Trailhead, Solite Park, and the Herndon Park. DPR will also be developing a slope control project near the downtown area and will keep the public informed of closures and progress.
