East Main Street Waterline Replacement Project Update and Two-Week Look Ahead

February 23, 2017

 

Improvements to the City’s waterline infrastructure will continue along the East Main Street corridor. Additional information regarding this project can be found at: http://durhamnc.gov/3001/East-Main-Street-Waterline-Replacement.

 

Planned Road / Lane Closures:

  • Week of 2/27:
    • Lane shifts on East Main Street between Dillard and Elizabeth / Commerce streets. On-street parking will be closed in the work area.
    • Lane closures and flaggers will be used to maintain traffic at Main / Dillard, Main / Elizabeth / Commerce, and at waterline crossing locations on Main Street.
    • Varying lane closures on Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth streets at water service crossing locations. Traffic control signs and marking or flaggers will be used at the crossing locations.
    • Isolated closures on Orange Street for brick repairs.
  • Week of 3/6:
    • Lane shifts on East Main Street between Dillard and Hood streets. On-street parking will be closed in the work area.
    • Lane closures and flaggers will be used to maintain traffic at Main / Dillard, Main / Elizabeth / Commerce, and at waterline crossing locations on Main Street.
    • Varying lane closures on Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth streets at water service crossing locations. Traffic control signs and marking or flaggers will be used at the crossing locations.
    • Isolated closures on Orange Street for brick repairs.

Saturday-Sunday February 25-26, 2017:

  • No work is planned.

Week of February 27, 2017: 

  • Waterline installation in East Main Street from Dillard Street to Elizabeth / Commerce streets will continue.
    • East Main Street traffic between Dillard and Elizabeth / Commerce streets will be shifted in order to maintain traffic in both directions. On-street parking along East Main Street will be closed to accommodate the waterline installation.
    • Lane closures and flaggers will be used to maintain traffic at Main / Dillard, Main / Elizabeth / Commerce, and at waterline crossing locations on Main Street.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Pedestrian and driveway access to buildings / facilities, including Oldham Towers will be maintained at all times.
  • Waterline service installation and testing in Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth streets will continue.
    • Varying localized lane closures on Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth Streets will be required. Traffic control signs and markings will be used for all detours.
    • Waterline service reconnections will be coordinated with affected parties on Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth streets at least seven days in advance of interruption.
    • Lane closures and flaggers will be used to maintain traffic at water service crossing locations on Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth streets.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Pedestrian and driveway access to buildings / facilities will be maintained at all times.
  • Repairs to bricks pavers in Orange Street will begin.
    • Isolated closures near work areas will be required.
    • Pedestrian access to all buildings / facilities will be maintained at all times.

Saturday-Sunday March 3-4, 2017:

  • No work is planned.

Week of March 6, 2017: 

  • Waterline installation in East Main Street from Dillard Street to Hood Street will continue.
    • East Main Street traffic between Dillard and Elizabeth/Commerce streets will be shifted in order to maintain traffic in both directions. On-street parking along East Main Street will be closed to accommodate the waterline installation.
    • Late in the week, it is anticipated that traffic and on-street parking in East Main Street between Dillard and Elizabeth / Commerce streets will be returned to its original pattern, and traffic on East Main Street between Elizabeth / Commerce and Hood streets will be shifted in order to maintain traffic in both directions.
    • Lane closures and flaggers will be used to maintain traffic at Main / Dillard, Main / Elizabeth / Commerce, and at waterline crossing locations on Main Street.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Pedestrian and driveway access to buildings / facilities, including Oldham Towers will be maintained at all times.
  • Waterline service installation in Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth streets will continue.
    • Varying localized lane closures on Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth Streets will be required. Traffic control signs and markings will be used for all detours.

Saturday-Sunday March 11-12, 2017:

  • No work is planned.

Future Weeks:

  • Restoration of sidewalks and other surfaces impacted by the project will continue.
  • Waterline installation improvements along East Main Street will continue east toward Hood / Fayetteville streets.
  • Following the completion of waterline installation in Main, Ramseur, Hood, and Elizabeth streets, stormwater improvements along Ramseur and East Main Street will begin. The westbound closure of Ramseur Street will remain in place for this the work.
  • A westbound closure of East Main Street between Angier Ave and Fayetteville Street will be required for waterline installation beneath the railroad tracks. A traffic detour using Elm, Ramseur, and Fayetteville streets will be used.
  • Following the completion of waterline installation at Fayetteville / East Main streets, pavement improvements will take place in the intersection.
