Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?

I would encourage Durham residents to serve on a board, committee, or commission because it is a great way to get involved, provide a civic service, and meet and connect with other Durhamites who might have a similar interest. Durham, in my opinion, is a unique and progressive city. Serving allows the city to grow and move forward with input from people who are living the experience.

What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?

I enjoy the opportunity to be part of the solution. I’ve heard too many times, “Somebody ought to...”. I believe that ‘somebody’ is me. Serving has allowed me to learn some of the governmental processes that influence decisions that go into policy. Also, it’s just plain fun to meet other members and develop relationships. I guess what I enjoy most about serving on the Durham Parks and Recreation Department, Recreation Advisory Commission (RAC) are the people.

What is your favorite part about living in Durham?

When asked about what I like about Durham, I think about the diversity and tolerance of its residents. Durham is one of those rare cities that doesn’t have a “cookie-cutter” feel. It’s unique in both its history and in contemporary life. I love that Durham has something to offer everyone. From relaxing in your favorite outdoor park, to a vibrant arts and music culture - including galleries, to world-renown shows and concerts at DPAC, Durham checks all the boxes. But my favorite part about living in Durham is the people. Durham is genuinely diverse, tolerate, and welcoming.
