Buchanan Boulevard Waterline Replacement Project Update and Two-Week Look Ahead

June 20, 2019

The City appreciates your ongoing patience with the work along the busy corridors associated with this project. Additional information regarding this project can be found at: http://durhamnc.gov/3617/Buchanan-Blvd-Waterline-Replacement.

Planned Road / Lane Closures will occur as follows:

  • Week of 6/24:
    • On street parking and turning lane closures in W. Chapel Hill Street between Kent Street and the Durham Freeway.
    • Temporary lane closures and shifts in W. Chapel Hill Street between Kent Street and the Durham Freeway. Flaggers will be utilized to maintain traffic.
    • On street parking and lane closures in Shepherd Street between W. Chapel Hill Street and Jackson Street.
    • Southbound lane closures in Buchanan Blvd between W. Main Street and W. Chapel Hill Street.
    • Isolated lane closures and traffic shifts in project area for sanitary sewer investigations and rehabilitation.
  • Week of 7/1:
    • Temporary lane closures and shifts in W. Chapel Hill Street between Kent Street and the Durham Freeway. Flaggers will be utilized to maintain traffic.
    • Southbound lane closures in Buchanan Blvd between W. Main Street and W. Chapel Hill Street.
    • Isolated lane closures and traffic shifts in project area for sanitary sewer investigations and rehabilitation.
    • No work will take place on July 4th.

Week of June 24, 2019:

  • W. Chapel Hill Street will have lane and on-street parking closures to accommodate pavement repairs.
    • Traffic will be shifted between Kent Street and the Durham Freeway to accommodate the asphalt installation.
    • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for all lane shifts.
    • Flaggers will be utilized for traffic control while work is taking place in intersections.
    • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during daytime work hours.
    • On-street parking will be closed in work areas.
    • Planned daytime work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
    • Pavement along W. Chapel Hill Street will be rough and uneven as final pavement repairs are being completed. Final pavement installation is planned to take place late this week.
  • Shepherd Street will have traffic lane and sidewalk closures between W. Chapel Hill Street and Jackson Street to accommodate waterline installation and pavement repairs.
    • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • On-street parking will be closed in work areas.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
  • Buchanan Boulevard will have southbound lane closures between W. Main Street and W. Chapel Hill Street.
    • Waterline installation will continue from the intersection of Buchanan Blvd and W. Chapel Hill Street north towards Main Street. Active work is anticipated between W. Main Street and W. Chapel Hill Street.
    • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for all traffic detours.
    • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
    • Water service reconnections will be scheduled with customers between W. Chapel Hill Street and Wilkerson Avenue seven (7) days prior to the proposed work.
  • Isolated lane closures and shifts lasting several hours will be required in the project area to accommodate sanitary sewer investigations and rehabilitation.
    • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for all traffic detours.
    • Sanitary sewer lining and dye testing will take place in Buchanan, Gattis, Exum, Burch, Wilkerson, and Jackson streets during daytime hours. Notices will be distributed to affected customers prior to work taking place.

Saturday – Sunday June 29-30, 2019:

  • No work will take place on Saturday or Sunday.

Week of July 1, 2019:

  • No work will take place on July 4th.
  • Shepherd Street will have traffic lane and sidewalk closures between W. Chapel Hill Street and Jackson Street to accommodate waterline installation and pavement repairs.
    • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • On-street parking will be closed in work areas.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.
  • Buchanan Boulevard will have southbound lane closures between W. Main Street and W. Chapel Hill Street.
    • Waterline installation will continue from the intersection of Buchanan Blvd and W. Chapel Hill Street north towards Main Street. Active work is anticipated between W. Main Street and W. Chapel Hill Street.
    • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for all traffic detours.
    • Sidewalk traffic will be disrupted.
    • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
    • Planned work hours are 7 AM to 7 PM.

  • Between 10 PM and 6 AM during the nights of July 15, 16, and 17, the Durham Freeway (NC-147) will be closed in both directions at the W. Chapel Hill Street bridge to accommodate utility work.
  • Traffic control signs and markings will be used for northbound and southbound NC-147 detours.
  • Noise levels in excess of the current City noise ordinance are anticipated during work hours.
