Council-Manager Government

In Durham’s council-manager form of government, voters elect the City Council which appoints the City Manager to run the operations of the organization. The City Manager serves as the top executive officer, providing strategic direction and management oversight to City departments, as well as ensuring implementation of City Council goals and policies, achievement of performance expectations, while employing an equity and social-justice approach.   • January 15, 2021 - Special City Council Meeting to Interview Final Vendors

    During this meeting City Council will interview the final vendors being considered for the city manager search. The meeting is open to the public. View meeting details and ways to watch

  • October 28, 2020 - Optional RFP Pre-Bid Informational Meeting

  • October 15, 2020 – City Issues Request for Proposals for Executive Search Firm

    The City of Durham seeks the services of an executive search firm with a national reach and proven expertise in government and public sector recruitment to recruit for and fill the position of City Manager. RFPs will be accepted through November 12


  • October 1, 2020 – Special City Council Meeting to Discuss City Manager Search

    Meeting held to discuss next steps in the City Manager search. During this meeting City Council decided to move forward with an RFP process to select a search firm, and the creation of a Council sub-committee, with Mayor Steve Schewel, Council Member Javiera Caballero, and Council Member DeDreana Freeman serving on the sub-committee.
