The Training Division is responsible for training, safety, recruitment, hiring, all fire academies and specialized and certification classes.
There are currently three on-shift training captains and one weekday training captain. These captains conduct training for new hires and monthly continuing education classes in fire, technical rescue and EMS.
The Safety Team has three assistant safety officers assigned to shifts. They conduct annual fitness testing, mask fit testing, hearing test, accident/injury investigations, and incident scene safety.
The City of Durham Battalion Chief of Training serves as EMS Coordinator for the City. This position works closely with Durham County Health officials to ensure that proper medical protocols are followed for Medical Emergency Responses. This position constantly monitors department procedures, especially during health crises. The position also ensures that department personnel are advised of procedural changes.
Recruitment and Hiring
Recruitment and hiring activities include attending school career fairs and job fairs, as well as advertising, testing, interviewing and selecting firefighters for the Operations Division. The Training Division also oversees all aspects of Fire Academies.
