The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is preparing to resurface Broad Street between West Main Street and Guess Road this year, and the City has worked with Alta Planning+Design, Inc. to develop new striping plans that add bicycle lanes and make the thoroughfare safer for all roadway users.To learn more about how this design was developed, we invite you to read this memo.
The City of Durham has been making strides to improve biking and walking in the City. In May 2017, City Council adopted the Durham Bike+Walk Implementation Plan, which provides recommendations for bicycle and pedestrian facilities to improve safety, connectivity, and quality of life throughout Durham. In this planning process, Broad Street was identified as part of the Priority Bicycle Network.
Broad Street is a local thoroughfare that provides connections between Duke’s East Campus to the south, North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics to the north, and commercial and residential destinations throughout the corridor. Approximately 13,000 motor vehicles travel through the corridor daily, along with bicyclists and pedestrians. For bicyclists the corridor is a key connection between bicycle facilities on Broad Street north of Guess Road and bicycle facilities on West Club Blvd and West Main Street. The planned improvements to the road will improve the safety for all road users by making it a more “complete street.” Complete Streets are designed for people of all ages and abilities to feel comfortable walking, biking, driving, or using transit.
In early June, the public were invited to share comments on three possible cross-sections. A meeting with Broad Street business owners, property owners, and residents was also held. This feedback helped the City and consultant develop the proposed final re-striping plans.
NCDOT plans to resurface the road in the late summer of 2018. The new striping will be installed following the resurfacing.
