New signals are being installed in Durham, designed to improve safety for pedestrians while minimizing delay to motor vehicles. While Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (often called HAWK signals) are perhaps new to drivers here, they are a proven safety measure used across the country. Signals currently exist on NC 54, Duke Street, and Guess Road. The flyer below, sent to all Durham residents in 2017, explains how the signals work.
