The City of Durham is home to more than 243,000 residents. To protect and serve these individuals and the thousands of visitors that the City hosts daily, the Durham Fire Department employs 316 personnel; approximately 90 percent serving in field operations.
 
In addition to fighting fires, Durham firefighters provide emergency medical assistance. We dutifully examine buildings for familiarization and to check for fire hazards. We invest hours in territorial studies — learning the best routes throughout the district. We regularly inspect and maintain the city’s fire hydrants to ensure that they are as ready for the next emergency as we are. We keep our stations clean and our apparatus ready to respond. Most importantly, we continuously train - drills, classes, independent study — whatever it takes.

Our Mission
The Durham Fire Department endeavors to enhance the quality of life for the residents and visitors of Durham through the delivery of comprehensive fire suppression, prevention, training, and emergency medical services.

Core Services
Fire Prevention - fire code enforcement, public education, community service, and fire investigation.
 
Emergency Response - fire suppression, emergency medical incident stabilization, occurrences of hazardous materials release, and technical rescue incidents including swift-water rescue.
 
Technical Rescue Program – the rescue of persons entrapped and/or injured beyond the scope of fire or emergency medical-specific operations.

Hazardous Materials Team - responds to the release of both known and unknown materials into the environment.
