The Durham Fire Department strives to enhance the quality of life for the citizens and visitors of Durham through the delivery of comprehensive fire suppression, prevention, training, and emergency medical services.
Our Service
The City of Durham is home to more than 228,000 residents. To protect and serve these individuals, and the thousands of visitors the city hosts on a daily basis, the Durham Fire Department employs 302 personnel, with approximately 90 percent of those individuals serving in field operations. With more than 19,000 emergency calls annually, the department holds an Insurance Service Organization (ISO) rating of three. The department has 16 Engine Companies, four Ladder Companies, and three Squad Companies serving as primary emergency response units. Specialty services and teams include a Hazardous Materials Response Team, participation in the NC Task Force 8 Urban Search and Rescue Team, a Technical Rescue team, and a Swiftwater Rescue team.
