Newly Renovated Elmira Avenue Park is Back In The Game

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Scheduled for Thursday, March 28

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham Parks and Recreation will host the official ribbon cutting for the newly renovated Elmira Avenue Park, 540 Elmira Ave. on Thursday, March 28 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

The park received a $15,000 grant based on the 41,000 votes it earned through the national Sprite Spark Park Project contest held on March 28-May 31, 2012. The purpose of the joint project from Sprite and the National Recreation and Park Association was to refresh courts in public parks and recreation centers throughout the country.

Elmira Avenue Park is one of the more than 50 courts that received grants to refresh their courts across the country. The 12.13-acre park was constructed in the 1970’s and has had very little renovation since other than the recent addition of lights to the tennis courts. The park received a new basketball goal system, surface repairs and the courts were re-stripped.

City officials, administrators and representatives from Durham Coca-Cola Bottling Company will host the ribbon cutting ceremony and participants from the community will play basketball on the newly refurbished courts. The event is free and open to the public. For information call (919) 560-4355.
