Strategic Plan Progress Report Offers Insight into How the City is Meeting its Goals
Durham’s strategic plan progress report is out – offering more insight into how the City is meeting its goals. The report is released every August and February with all crime data and analysis associated with the “safe and secure community” goal now updated monthly. Strategic Initiatives Manager Jay Reinstein explains some of the specific findings of the report.

Durham Receives Award for Superior Management
The City’s Strategic Plan and the online reporting system that keeps the public informed about its progress are part of the reason why Durham is being recognized for its performance management success. The City is being honored by the International City and County Management Association with a Certificate of Distinction. The award is for Durham’s superior management efforts. Some of the criteria for the award include the use of performance data in strategic planning and operational decision-making; reporting of performance data to the public through budgets; newsletters and information provided to elected officials; and efforts to verify data to ensure reliability. Durham is the only city in North Carolina to receive the award.

Durham Receives Firefighting Grant
More Durham fire trucks will soon be fully staffed, thanks to a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response – or SAFER – grant will allow 15 new firefighters to be hired by the Durham Fire Department. That will increase staffing on several of the trucks from three to four firefighters per truck. Fire Chief Bruce Pagan explains why this is important.
