What: Community Update on Violent Crime Reduction Efforts
Who: Presenters are Mayor William V. “Bill” Bell, Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez, Sr., and Durham County Sheriff Michael Andrews. Other members of the Violent Crime Reduction Roundtable will be available for comments or to answer questions from the community.
When: Thursday, July 26, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Format: Refreshments start at 6:30 p.m. The program will begin at 7 p.m. with presentations by Mayor Bell, Chief Lopez, and Sheriff Andrews. A question-and-answer session for the community will then follow.

• To develop strategies to combat violent crime in Durham, Mayor Bell convened a group, the Violent Crime Reduction Roundtable (VCRR), consisting of City and County leaders, to work together to renew efforts and strengthen the community’s commitment to reduce gun violence.
• Since late 2011, Mayor Bell and members of VCRR have been meeting to develop ongoing strategies to reduce violent crime – including revisiting bond guidelines for violent crime offenders; improving communications and coordination between law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office and judges; enhancing Police Department and Sheriff’s Office outreach to the community and in target areas; and building stronger community engagement efforts.
• Participants of the VCRR are, in addition to the presenters above, County Commissioner Chair Michael Page, District Attorney Leon Stanback, Chief Magistrate Donald Paschall, Chief District Court Judge Marcia Morey, Clerk of Court Archie Smith, East Durham Children’s Initiative Chair and CEO Barker French and David Reese, County Manager Mike Ruffin, and City Manager Tom Bonfield.
