National Gun Violence Awareness Day

Durham Police to Observe National Gun
 Violence Awareness Day June 2
Residents Encouraged to Wear Orange, Assemble at DPD Headquarters at 9 a.m.

The Durham Police Department (DPD) will observe National Gun Violence Awareness Day on Friday, June 2. To show support, the DPD headquarters building (505 W. Chapel Hill St.) will be illuminated with orange lighting during the evening and employees will wear orange clothing and wristbands throughout the day. Durham residents are invited to wear orange and join police employees in front of DPD headquarters at 9 a.m. tomorrow to show solidarity against gun violence.

The local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America will read a proclamation and a moment of silence will be held to remember victims of gun violence during the 9 a.m. gathering. Gun violence kills more than 90 Americans a day and injures hundreds more. On June 2 people across the country will wear orange, a color that symbolizes the value of human life.

Traditionally violent crimes involve the use of illegal guns. Durham CrimeStoppers, in partnership with Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), began a Gun Stoppers Initiative to reduce gun crimes in 2015. The Gun Stoppers Initiative focuses on soliciting information about illegal firearms in the community such as those possessed by felons, and those used in crimes. CrimeStoppers pays up to $500 cash for information leading to a felony arrest and recovery of an illegal gun in Durham.

CrimeStoppers offers anonymity in addition to cash rewards. Residents with information about those in possession of illegal guns should contact Durham CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. Callers never have to give their name.
