Construction Standards, Specifications & Standard Details

The Durham construction standards, specifications and details for streets, and water and sewer are available through the links on the right. The AutoCad drawing files (version 10) are available as well.

The standards and specifications for streets, and water and sewer construction were published in 1991 and 1994, respectively. As a result, they are not comprehensive and do not include all of today’s requirements. The standard details have been a work in progress and are more up to date; however, there are some areas of construction yet to be addressed. The most recent update to the standard details was September 24, 2011.

Construction Areas Not Addressed

In the areas of construction that are not addressed by the Durham standards, the city frequently uses North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) standards. The NCDOT specifications are referenced in the Public Works contract documents and handbooks for construction projects.

For information about a construction standard, specification or detail, call or email a manager or senior staff in the Engineering Inspections or Development Review groups.
