Community Programs

Citizens Police Academy
The Citizens Police Academy, offered in English and Spanish, is the premiere program for any Durham resident wanting to know more about the operations of the Durham Police Department. The 6 week academy, which is free of charge, provides 1st-hand knowledge and front line experiences. Classes feature a ride-a-long with an officer on patrol, K-9 and DWI demonstrations, gang awareness and domestic violence information and even a driving simulator. For information and an application, visit the Citizens Police Academy page.

Annual Police Week
The Durham Police Department invites the community to show support of its law enforcement officers year-round, but especially during National Police Week. While the actual dates change from year to year, National Police Week is always the calendar week of May 15 beginning on Sunday.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 designating May 15 as Peace Officers' Memorial Day, and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. The law was amended by the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, Public Law 103-322, signed by President Bill Clinton, directing that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff on all government buildings on May 15 each year.

For information about Police Week and all department activities, call the Durham Police Department's Public Relations Office at 919-560-4322, ext. 29194.

National Night Out

National Night Out is "America's Night Out Against Crime" sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The Durham Police Department coordinates a citywide National Night Out (NNO) observance annually to:
  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
For information, call the Police Department Public Relations Office at 919-560-4322, ext. 29194 and visit the National Night Out page.
