Durham City Government has instituted the CodeRED® Emergency Notification System - an ultra high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications.
This system allows City Emergency Communications officials to telephone
either all subscribers or geographically-targeted areas of the City in
case of an emergency situation requiring immediate action (such as a
boil-water notice, missing child, or evacuation). The system is capable
of dialing up to 60,000 phone numbers per hour. It then delivers a
recorded message to either a live person or an answering machine, making
three attempts to connect to any number.
This message system will only be used for emergency purposes. Examples of times when the CodeRED system could be utilized are:
Chemical spill or gas leak
Drinking water contamination
Emergency incidents where rapid and accurate notification is essential for life safety
Evacuation notice and route
Fires or floods
Severe weather alerts
Residential, Business, & Weather Warning Data Update
Residents and business are able to input an unlisted number, cell phone
number, or other secondary phone number into the system for contact
during an emergency situation. To enter your number into the system,
visit the CodeRED Residential, Business, and Weather Warning Data Update page.
