Future of the Police Headquarters Site

The City of Durham and a team of consultants are currently evaluating future options for re-use/re-development of the current Durham Police Department Headquarters site at 505 W. Chapel Hill. 


The City of Durham owns a property at 505 W. Chapel Hill Street, a four-acre parcel that contains the current Durham Police Department (DPD) Headquarters building and supportive surface parking lots. The existing office building was originally built for the Home Security Life Insurance Company in the late 1950s. The building occupies less than a quarter of the site.

The site will become vacant in fall 2018, when the DPD moves to a new headquarters building on East Main Street that is currently under construction. The City will not have a municipal purpose for the property after DPD re-locates to its new facility, and wants your input as it considers the future use of the site.

The information received from the surveys and public events (detailed below) will inform the consulting team that has been hired by the City to consider re-use opportunities for the site. The consulting team will report out their findings to Durham City Council on November 9.

Attend a Community Workshop on 9/21 or 9/25!

The General Services Department, Planning Department, and consultant team are jointly hosting two community workshops:

Thursday, September 21st (7:00pm – 8:30pm)
Monday, September 25th (5:30pm – 7:00pm)

Both workshops will be held at the Durham Armory, 212 Foster Street. Attendees will be able to hear information about the project and site, and provide input on urban design and future uses. No RSVP is required. Residents and interested parties may attend the workshop that is most convenient for them. 

Other Events 

In addition to the public workshop on September 21, City staff will also be visiting various locations in-and-around Downtown Durham to solicit public opinion about the site. Look for our table and staff! Such events include:

Saturday, September 16 at the Durham Farmers Market (9 a.m. – 11 a.m.)
Monday, September 18 at City Hall before the City Council meeting (5 p.m. – 7 p.m.)
Tuesday, September 19 at Durham Station (3 p.m. – 6 p.m.)
Wednesday, September 20 at the Durham Co-Op (5 p.m. – 7p.m.)
