Our Times, Our Community, Our Voices
The Northeast Central Durham Community VOICE is a collaborative effort between the journalism programs at UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University, teens, the City of Durham, and area civic, church, business and educational leaders. Our goal is to foster civic engagement by focusing on this unique community, and thus lift it up with stories, photos and video that provide a meeting place so we can all hear and appreciate the authentic voices of Northeast Central Durham.
The VOICE is generously supported by an equipment grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, with newsroom space in the Golden Belt Campus at 807 E Main Street provided by Scientific Properties, and printing donated by the Daily Tar Heel of UNC-Chapel Hill. Each semester 5 web editions are issued at the Durham VOICE Website, and 3 monthly print editions are printed each semester, which may be picked up for free at local schools, businesses, churches, libraries, and civic offices.
Area teens are encouraged to join the staff, which is mentored by faculty and students from UNC and NCCU. To participate, volunteer or comment, email us.
Thanks to Scientific Properties for giving the VOICE our newsroom. The Northeast Central Durham Community VOICE is indebted to Scientific Properties of Durham for donating space in Building 4 of the Golden Belt Campus on East Main Street. We are proud to be a part of the Durham renaissance and honored that Scientific Properties recognizes the value of the VOICE.
